An Indiana state court judge and his wife were in stable condition Monday after they were shot at their Lafayette home on Sunday, as authorities continued a search for suspects, according to police and statements from local and state officials.
Lafayette Police said officers responded Sunday afternoon to a report of a shooting in a residential area about 60 miles (96 kilometers) northwest of Indianapolis and found Steven Meyer and Kimberly Meyer injured. Police said the couple was treated for their wounds and that officers recovered shell casings from the scene.
Authorities said Steven Meyer, a Tippecanoe Superior Court judge, suffered an injury to his arm. They also said Kimberly Meyer had a hip injury from the attack.
In a statement Monday, Mayor Tony Roswarski told residents that authorities were using every available resource to apprehend the person or people responsible for what he called “this senseless unacceptable act of violence.” He did not provide a suspect description.
Lafayette Police said the investigation remains active and involves local, state and federal agencies. The department said it has not released a motive or a suspect description as the search continues.
Kimberly Meyer, speaking through a statement, said she had “great confidence” in investigators and expressed gratitude to officers and medical professionals who helped her and her husband.
The shooting also raised safety concerns among Indiana judges. In a letter to judges, state Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush urged colleagues to “please remain vigilant in your own security,” writing that they must not only feel safe but also be safe while working to resolve more than 1 million cases a year.
In her statement Monday, Kimberly Meyer said violence against a judge or a judge’s family is “completely unacceptable.”
