The shooting prompted Greenville police to request an independent investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. No motive had been established as of Sunday, and the department did not release the identity of the wounded officer.
A Greenville, South Carolina police officer was shot and wounded while sitting in his patrol car early Sunday in what Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis described as an “ambush-style attack,” and a suspect was later fatally shot by deputies following a vehicle pursuit, authorities said.
The officer was repeatedly shot early Sunday, the city of Greenville said in a statement. He was treated at a hospital and released.
Lewis said in a video posted to Facebook that authorities identified a suspect after the attack and pursued his vehicle, which led to “an exchange of gunfire.” The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said the suspect received “at least one fatal gunshot wound” and identified him as David William Lane, 42, of Greenville.
Relatives of Lane could not be reached Sunday for comment.
The Greenville Police Department did not respond to questions from the Associated Press about a possible motive or the identity of the wounded officer.
The city said authorities asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to conduct an independent investigation and that the Greenville Police Department is “fully cooperating.”
Greenville, with a population of around 70,000, is located about 90 miles northwest of the state capital of Columbia.
