Chicago man Michael McKee has been charged with the murders of an Ohio woman and her husband, according to court and county records.
McKee, 39, was booked Saturday and is being held in Illinois, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said. Prosecutors allege McKee shot and killed Dr. Spencer Tepe, a 37-year-old dentist, and Monique Tepe, 39, in their Columbus home.
Columbus police found the Tepes on the second floor of their house on Dec. 30 during a wellness check. Police said the couple’s two young children were in the home and unharmed.
Dispatchers received calls of concern after Spencer Tepe did not show up for work, including a call from Tepe’s boss. The boss said the absence was “out of character,” according to the report.
Police had also released security footage earlier this week showing a person of interest in a dark hoodie and light colored pants walking in an alley near the couple’s home. Investigators said the footage was from the window of time when they believed the couple was attacked, between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
The Franklin County Coroner’s Office said it would not finish official reports for several weeks. In an email Tuesday, a coroner’s spokesperson said the couple died in an “apparent homicide by gunshot wounds.”
Records described McKee and Monique Tepe’s relationship history as it was reflected in court filings. McKee and Monique Tepe married in 2015 and filed for divorce two years later. McKee’s address was listed in Chicago, according to the report.
Monique and Spencer Tepe married in 2020, according to the couple’s obituary. The report said there were no Ohio county court records reflecting whether McKee has an attorney yet, and that his next court date is set for Monday.
