An immigration officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37, in Minneapolis on Wednesday in what the Department of Homeland Security described as a self-defense shooting — at least the fifth death linked to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations since last year, the Associated Press reported. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said video of the incident showed it was “reckless and unnecessary.”
The deaths span roughly six months of enforcement operations across five states. No officers or agents have been charged in any of the five cases, according to the AP.
The shooting occurred as federal agencies escalated enforcement in Minnesota, where an anticipated 2,000 agents and officers are being deployed, the AP reported. The Department of Homeland Security said the officer fired in self-defense as Good tried to run down officers with her vehicle.
Chicago Cook Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop
ICE agents fatally shot Silverio Villegas González, 38, during a traffic stop on September 12 in a suburb of Chicago. Relatives said the line cook from Mexico had dropped off one of his children at day care that morning.
The Department of Homeland Security alleged Villegas González evaded arrest and dragged an officer with his vehicle, and said the officer who fired feared for his life and was hospitalized for “serious injuries.” Local police body camera videos, however, showed the agent walking around afterward and dismissing his own injuries as “nothing major,” the AP reported. The Department of Homeland Security said the death remains under investigation.
A separate non-fatal shooting that fall in Chicago wounded Marimar Martinez five times after a Border Patrol agent fired on her. A felony charge against Martinez was later dismissed after videos emerged that her attorneys said showed an agent steering his vehicle into her truck.
Farmworker Fell from Greenhouse Roof During Raid
Jaime Alanis, 57, fell about 30 feet from the roof of a greenhouse at Glass House Farms, a licensed cannabis grower in Camarillo, California, on July 10 while immigration authorities conducted a raid rounding up dozens of farmworkers. He died at a hospital two days later.
Relatives said Alanis had worked at the farm for a decade and sent his earnings to his wife and daughter in Mexico. During the raid, Alanis called family to say he was hiding, the AP reported.
The Department of Homeland Security said Alanis was never in custody and was not being chased by immigration authorities when he climbed onto the roof.
Man Struck on California Freeway Near Home Depot
Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, 52, of Guatemala died after being struck by an SUV traveling 50 to 60 miles per hour on Interstate 210 in Monrovia, California on August 14, after fleeing on foot during an ICE enforcement operation near a Home Depot store. He died at a hospital, and was later identified by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.
The Department of Homeland Security said Montoya Valdez was not being pursued by immigration authorities when he ran toward the freeway.
Gardener Killed on Virginia Interstate
Josué Castro Rivera, 24, of Honduras was struck and killed by a pickup truck on Interstate 264 in Norfolk, Virginia on October 23 while fleeing on foot after ICE officers stopped his vehicle during a traffic stop.
His brother, Henry Castro, said Castro Rivera was heading to a gardening job with three passengers when the stop occurred. The Department of Homeland Security said the operation was “targeted, intelligence-based” and that Castro Rivera had “resisted heavily and fled.” Henry Castro said his brother had come to the United States four years earlier and worked to send money to family in Honduras.
