George Conway, a former conservative lawyer who has become one of President Donald Trump’s most outspoken critics, has filed paperwork to run for Congress in New York’s 12th Congressional District, according to an Associated Press report published Dec. 23. The filing was made Monday, but Conway had not made an official announcement at the time, and his campaign did not respond to a request for comment, the report said.

Conway’s move would put him in the growing field of Democrats seeking to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler, a Democrat whose seat represents a district centered in Manhattan. The 12th Congressional District stretches from Union Square to the northern edge of Central Park, covering parts of the Upper East Side and Upper West Side, AP reported.

AP reported that Conway initially supported Trump during the president’s first term. At the time, Conway was married to pollster and strategist Kellyanne Conway, who served as a senior presidential adviser in the White House.

Later, Conway became one of Trump’s fiercest critics. AP said Conway condemned Trump’s actions on social media and cable news with an intensity that often mirrored Kellyanne Conway’s public defense of him. The Conways later announced their divorce in early 2023.

The Associated Press report also said Conway helped found the anti-Trump Lincoln Project. AP reported that Jack Schlossberg—John F. Kennedy’s grandson—announced in November that he was seeking to succeed Nadler, and Micah Lasher, a former Nadler aide and current New York state lawmaker, has also entered the Democratic primary.
