The candidate field
As many as 19 Republicans have said they will run or are considering entering the race, according to the AP. Named candidates or likely entrants include state Sen. Colton Moore of Trenton, District Attorney Clayton Fuller, and Paulding County businessman Brian Stover. Reagan Box of Armuchee, who had been running a longshot campaign for the Republican Senate nomination, switched into the 14th District race in December.
On the Democratic side, Shawn Harris — who lost the 2024 race to Greene — is seeking the seat, as is Clarence Blalock of Hiram. Independent Rob Ruszkowski of Rising Fawn is also running.
All candidates will appear on the same all-party ballot on March 10. If no candidate wins a majority, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on April 7.
The district
The 14th District stretches from Atlanta’s northwest suburbs through all or part of 10 counties to the Tennessee state line. The Cook Political Report rates it as the most Republican-leaning district in Georgia.
Greene’s departure
Greene left Congress after a falling-out with President Donald Trump. She had criticized Trump’s foreign policy and his reluctance to release documents in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Trump said he would support a primary challenge against her; Greene announced her resignation approximately a week later, according to the AP.
Qualification timeline
Candidates will qualify during a three-day window next week. Those who intend to serve beyond the remainder of Greene’s term must qualify again for the general election during March 2 through March 6. Party primaries for the November general election are scheduled for May 19.
