A Cessna 172N crashed and caught fire Sunday at Provincetown Municipal Airport on Cape Cod, killing the pilot, the only person aboard, city officials said. Firefighters and other emergency responders extinguished the blaze at the crash site near the seaside community at the very tip of Cape Cod.

The pilot was pronounced dead at the crash site, officials said in a news release. The airport was closed following the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement that it will investigate the crash. The board gave no preliminary indication of a possible cause.

Provincetown is located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Boston at the end of Cape Cod, the hooked peninsula jutting into the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern Massachusetts.
